This is an annual prize intended to recognise extraordinary women in science in Africa who are making a significant and important contribution to the exploration of the deep human journey or have the potential to make such contributions.  The prize specifically targets early career scientists, though is not limited to women at this career stage.  The award is significant and intended to support the awardee in continuing to make impact in the field.

The Prize Committee will meet on an annual basis to select a recipient.

The awards are intended to be prestigious and internationally competitive. Their endowed nature ensures impact on science and exploration in perpetuity. Awards will be adjudicated by a prestigious international panel of scientists representing a diversity of fields within the broad subject area. A nominated member of the Pouroulis family will also sit on the judging panel. The process will be overseen by the University of the Witwatersrand. For donors who endow this prize, there is the option to name the prize in their honour or in the name of a nominee or entity.
